I hope you add your comments so we can share our views on how to use Literature with kids. This is a good way of learning in a cooperative way. Let's give it a try!!!! Let´s make this site our meeting place. See you
Activity Nº 1
Children's Literature is the only literary type defined not by any special features of its own, but by its audience. (Grolier Encyclopedia)
How do you agree with this statement? Discuss

Is there any other definition better than this one in your own opinion?

ReplyDeleteFirst of all I do agree with "Grolier´s" definition because in my opinion it doesn´t matter how brilliant a piece of literature can be, the audience decides whether it is good or bad, if it is a success or not.
I was able to find a definition of "Children´s literature" quoted by Hanson: "Children´s literature is the material created for and widely read, viewed and heard by children, that has an imaginative element". I have found this definition in http://www.warriorlibrarian.com/LIBRARY/inst_kidlit.html
I hope you enjoy this definition.. Kisses
I like it but was it quoted by Hanson or said by him???
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you as regards what makes a piece of writing successful. Children are wonderful judges and they always make good choices.I also think that the imaginative element is very important as their imagination needs to be fed at this early stage of their lives
ACTIVITY Nº 1:
ReplyDeleteI like and agree with ""Grolier´s" definition because I think that children are so natural and sincere that allow us to create and imagine other ways of teaching and, of course, learning.
I have found an explanation given by Galda and Cullinan in the book "The Role of Children’s Literature in the Teaching of English to Young Learners in Taiwan". They claim that "literature entertains and informs, that it enables young people to explore and understand their world and enriches their lives and widens their horizons. Thus, through literature, children learn about people and places on the other side of the world. They can travel back and forth in time to visit familiar places and people, to meet new friends, and to see new worlds. They can explore their own feelings, shape their own values, and imagine lives beyond the one they live”.
I hope you enjoy it!
See you!
I also agree with Grolier Encyclopedia definition. Many master pieces which were not written for children have become children’s literature just because they were read and enjoyed by them. I mean it has to do with the fact that there are no established rules or patterns to follow; a work becomes Children’s Literature when it is able to enchant kids and they love spending time reading it.
ReplyDeleteI really love the above definition. Nevertheless I’ve selected this one to share with you:
Children's literature is literature which impacts directly through reading a fairly decent percentage of the population which is considered children by the culture it is from.

ReplyDeleteI totally agree with Grolier Encyclopedia as children's nature and innocence with regards to literature do not focus on literary styles. They enjoy stories just because they trigger their imagination out. Although books were written mainly for adults, some of them became suitable for kids as they still offer readers enjoyment as well as memorable characters and situations.
ReplyDeleteI’d like to share with you Orson Scott Card’s opinion about Children’s literature."One can make a good case for the idea that children are often the guardians of the truly great literature of the world, for in their love of story and unconcern for stylistic fads and literary tricks, children unerringly gravitate toward truth and power.”
